Despite being damaged by two earthquakes and the severe Black Friday bushfires, Omeo in the Victorian Alps retains its historic character. A. M. Pearson Park in the town houses several heritage buildings. Omeo was a goldrush town, and at Oriental Claims, cliffs left by sluicing and tunnel openings can still be seen. Lake Omeo, in an extinct volcano, is noted for its birdlife.
There are plenty of outdoor pursuits up in the high country, including bushwalking, horseback riding, four wheel drive touring, fishing and whitewater rafting on the rivers when they are swollen with melting snow in spring. Of course, in winter there is skiing and snowboarding and Omeo is an access point for those heading to Mount Hotham.
