Believe it or not, this rich farming area about 210km south-east of Perth boasts that it has within its shire area of some 198,900ha (population 1000) more stud farms than any other district in Australia.
The cultivation of cereal grains balance the local economy. Within the town of Wickepin itself, there are some fine Edwardian buildings along with the house that Albert Facey made famous in his best-selling book, A Fortunate Life, much of which centred on the author’s time spent living and working in the district.
Albert Facey was closely associated with Wickepin's past and many of the sites mentioned in his book can still be seen today. The original Facey homestead was built outside the Wickepin Shire boundary to the south. The homestead was donated to the shire and was relocated to the main street of Wickepin in 2000.
North of Wickepin is the tiny town of Yealering and its attendant Lake Yealering - a picturesque place where they used to hold horse races on the lake bed during dry spells. When there’s water in it, the lake is ideal for water skiing, swimming, sailing and windsurfing.
