Glenorchy  Tasmania

The city of Glenorchy lies on the west bank of the Derwent River to the north of Hobart. The river and the Mount Wellington Range form natural boundaries to a town which was indebted to agricultural and horticultural producers for its original prosperity, but which now has a strong industrial base.

In addition to producers as diverse as miner Pasminco EZ, International Catamarans and Cadbury Schweppes, Glenorchy is also home to the Royal Hobart Showgrounds and the Tasmanian Transport Museum.

Unlike so many of its counterparts round the land, the Glenorchy Showgrounds is not a once-a-year venue. It is used throughout the year, principally for regular pacing, trotting and greyhound racing meetings.

The Moorilla Estate Winery, which pioneered the planting of Tasmania’s most successful red grape, pinot noir, welcomes visitors to its cellar door and top flight restaurant at nearby Berriedale.
