Mount Beauty  Victoria

Built in 1947 for men working on the hydro-electric complex at Kiewa, Mount Beauty has since become a significant tourist destination in its own right and as a base for exploring the surrounding alpine district.

Three hundred and thirty-five kilometres north-east of Melbourne, the town is at the base of Victoria’s highest peak, 1948 metre Mount Bogong and is set among scenic valleys, snow-capped mountains, lakes and wild rivers brimming with fish.

The conquestathon family day is held in March when groups walk to the summit of Mount Bogon. Mount Beauty also hosts the annual Bogong Festival in November to call people together and to perpetuate an ancient Aboriginal ritual by celebrating peace and goodwill at a time when spring transforms the high country into lush pastures of wildflower and coursing streams.

The area is liberally studded with high country walking tracks for people of all fitness levels. Each of the walks presents a fascinating but different perspective on the singular landscape.,
