Home to HMVS Cerebus, Black Rock lies on the shoreline of Port Phillip Bay about 20km or so south-east of Melbourne’s CBD.
Black Rock is part of the Bayside City, which stretches from Brighton in the north to Beaumaris in the south, and which embraces some of the most desirable, seaside residential suburbs in Melbourne.
Immediately to the east of this Black Rock is a ‘parkland’ of golf courses, including Royal Melbourne, as well as Victoria, Cheltenham and Sandringham.
There’s swimming and boating, and some tasty bay fish to be landed at Black Rock, where hardly anyone ever has a bad day.
Keep travelling south to the lovely Mornington Peninsula. One of Melbourne's most popular aquatic playgrounds, Brighton Beach, of course, is the focus of one of Victoria's most recognisable promotional photographs - a shot which frames those famous, brightly painted bathing boxes against the Melbourne CBD across the inner reaches of Port Phillip Bay.
