While Bega has long been associated with fine cheeses, the development of a local winery and the rapid growth in the popularity of snow skiing has promoted the capital of the NSW South Coast to the level of a well-rounded tourist centre.
Set on the junction of the Princes and Snowy Mountains highways, Bega is close to the surf and fishing resorts of the coast and a short drive from the Kosciusko ski fields.
The area’s long and varied history is reflected in the displays and exhibits of the Family Historical Museum. You can sample the fruit of the local grape at the Grevillea Estate Winery, while you can catch up with traditional local craft at the Cheese Factory at the northern end of town.
The heritage-rich town of Candelo, which remains much as it was at the turn of the twentieth century, is 23 kilometres to the south-west of Bega.
The nearest coastal point is Tathra, 18 kilometres to the east, where you’ll find some beautiful beaches and an old wharf. Seventeen kilometres north of Tathra, the Mimosa Rocks National Park is a bush wonderland of fine beaches, rewarding walking tracks and fishing, while Bournda National Park to the south offers similar recreational pursuits.
And when the call of the snow echoes across the valleys, you can be on your skis and the slopes after a 2 hour drive. As the locals say, base yourself in Bega and you can surf the Pacific blue and ski the Snowies, all on the same day.
